This is a pronunciation practice lesson to help you improve your pronunciation of the English vowel sound / ʌ / (under, won). In this pronunciation lesson, you’ll learn words and phrases with the / ʌ / vowel sound. Many English learners know how to make this sound, but don’t know in what words this sound occurs!

Throughout the video I use IPA symbols to help explain pronunciation. / ʌ / is the IPA symbol for this sound.

[Note that some of the words, like ‘colour,’ are the British/Canadian spelling. I’m going to fix that in a future video!]

Listen and repeat after me to practice your pronunciation!

      Hi, Miosotis!

At this time I have no plans to make videos for all the vowel sounds. In this blog post, I have links to some other websites where you can watch more videos:

    Hi Melanie,
Looking at the phonetic symbols, I find that everything I’ve learned at high school was wrong! Specially the vowell sounds.
It’s very difficult for us who speak spanish -I’m from Argentina, to pronounce and differentiate English vowels. We only use 5 vowel sounds, and their sounds are very clear.
I think you should make more lessons about vowel sounds.
    Thank you very much.

      Hi, Fabian!

This is very common for Spanish-speaking students. Most likely you learned English from Spanish-speaking teachers who learned English in school just like you, so they probably had problems with pronunciation, too. Also, unless you are surrounded by native English speakers or are constantly listening to English songs, TV shows & movies, it’s very hard to hear the difference between all 15 American English vowel sounds (or all 20 British English vowel sounds!)

Now that you know, you can improve! Here are my tips for improving your pronunciation. In tips #3 & 5, you’ll find a list of channels on YouTube or other websites where you can watch more videos about vowels!

      Good luck to you,
      = )
