English Pronunciation: Practice the L and R Sounds! (video)

In this pronunciation practice video, we’ll do some exercises to practice the L and R consonant sounds at the beginning of a word or syllable. Get your mirror ready, so you can make sure that your mouth is doing the same thing as my mouth. If you need to review how to make these sounds, watch this video first. Let’s get started!

That’s it! If you still have trouble hearing the difference between L & R, watch this video again. Watch it as many times as necessary for you to hear the difference … and remember: practice these sounds for AT LEAST 15 minutes every day! Good luck, and I’ll see you in the next video.

It seems to be almost impossible for me to tell the differnce between two sounds.
For most Koreans, two sounds are usually accepted as one.
    (Korean alphabet ‘ㄹ’)

I want to believe the motto ‘ practice makes perfect’ is for me.

      Hi, Song,

You are not alone. Many Asian language-speakers have this same problem.

The motto is true! Practice DOES make perfect! I promise you. Keep watching this video until you can finally hear a difference.

      All the best,

    Hi Melanie,

I am a CELTA certified teacher who tried using your website for the first time.

I am really impressed with the amount of work you have put onto this website.

Any suggestions on how to help a student who gets his Bs and Ds mixed up?

    Regards,
    Nary

      Hi, Nary,

Thank you for your kind words! Unfortunately I’ve never encountered a student who gets his Bs and Ds mixed up. What is his native language? I had an Arabic-speaking student who mixed up /p/ and /b/, but not /d/. I can’t think of anything other than the standard minimal pairs, tongue twisters, & phrase practice.

      Good luck to you!

I’ve never stopped myself and see especially the pronunciation of the R, that’s why your emphasis in the R (phonema, pneuma or whatever it is called in lesson 1). For example, ‘room’ tends to sound like ‘broom’, but the ‘b’ very soft and somehow this explain the form of the mouth at the very beginning. But now I’m able to understand it and try to practice it. Excellent video, Melanie.

    Cheers,

    Daniel
